clearly asks for the enforcement by the Military of the ruling of the Freedmens Court. in case of course that the Civil Officers refuse to act. No Civil Officer can be found to enforce these judgements, and Genl Brown has instructed me, verbally at least, that officers would not be sustained in enforcing judgements of Freedmens Courts. Lt Col Jordan having in one case undertaken it.

Respectfully returned to Brig Genl Brown with the information that Wm. H. Hunt under contract made with Maj Genl B F Butler dated Jan 30th 1864. cut large quantities of wood on the Peninsula - said contract was cancelled by Maj Genl E.O.C. Ord on the 22nd of Feb 1865. The within mentioned wood was cut under this Contract.
A portion of this wood was sold to Messr. White & Chahoon in the latter part of 1865. as per indorsement of Mr. W. H. Hunt on record at this office. dated Feby 4th 1866. The Military authorities have since the annullment of Hunts contract furnished him protection for what wood he had already cut. this in the early part of 1866. The land from which this wood is alleged to have been cut was restored to Messrs W. C. and S. H. Miner per S.O. No. 85. series of 1865 dated Oct 25th.
