Received back Feb.26.67
Bureau R.F. and A.L.
Office Asst Supt Sub-D.
Farmville Va Feb 22
Respectfully returned to Maj J. R. Stone Supt 2nd Dist &c with the information that the records of the Buckingham Co Office recd. by me from Capt Ray Aug 1, 1866. have been carefully examined and they furnish no information concerning the within named case. I knew nothing of it until the enclosed papers reached my July 14th 1867. In accordance with the enclosed instructions I made an effort to collect this claim without an execution, but find that the within named Matt Brown is clearly insolvent, and the money could not be made out of him by due process of law I have made a record of the case and will continue to watch said Brown and may succeed in getting a portion of said claim if not all in the course of time. I think however that it is doubtful.
