Feb. 21, 67 Respectfully returned to Maj. J. R. Stone Supt. 2. Dist &c within information that the complainant in this case came into my office on the 10th Oct. 1866 and made oath to the following viz. That Geo. Farrar while visiting near Pamphlins Depot in Appomattox Co. Va. in July 1866. Employed him (Mason) to labor in his (Farrars) plantation for the remainder of the year 1866. That the complainant did labor faithfully for said Farrar until Oct. 10th 1866 on which date Farrar without just cause discharged from his service complainant refusing to pay him for his labor - assaulting him - and forcibly ejecting him (Mason) from the premises Mason also stated that Farrar had twice before this assaulted him with a club. the other case alluded to in the enclosed letter was not of so agravated a nature and was subsequently adjudicated by the Magistrates _ I have heard of none since. Presuming that the officers empowered to act in the premises, would in proper time investigate this case, I make no record of it further than what appears in my "letter Book" and memorandums attached thereto and as I cannot find the complainant now, I am unable to furnish any further information on this subject. I have no doubt however from all I can learn of the character &c of the Defendant that the Statement made by the complainant so far as this case is concerned an true in my particular. Sig'd Jno. Comr of Virginia is satisfied that Mr. Cuthers[[?]] is the proper person to receive the rent he will please state the amount he thinks should be paid by the Bureau and for what period of time upon such recommendation it will be paid by the Commissioner - these papers to be returned.
