The affairs at Staunton have been thoroughly investigated by Captain G. Mallery 43d Infty Act. Inspect Genl. Bureau of R.F and AL. State of Va. Capt Mallery's report relieves Mr. Tukey from the charge of dishonesty, but shows a most unfortunate condition of affairs arising out of a quarrel between Lieut. G. F. Cook. (Mr Tukeys predecessor) The teachers of the Freedmens Schools, and Mr Tukey Mr. Tukey anticipating the recommendation of Capt Mallery has resigned. We will be relived as soon as his successor arrives on the ground. Serious charges are made affecting Lieut Cook and the Teachers, which have not yet been fully examined. Mr. Thos. P. Has been a widow about seven years has one child about 12. Yrs of age - is a respectable woman_ extremely poor and during her widowhood has supported herself and child as best she could. Her Husband was a northern man_ and at the date of his death was residing in Nashville Tenn_ Mrs Loomis has been in Cumberland County during the war and by reason of her loyalty to the Federal cause rendered herself extremely odious to her neighbors, I am of the opinion that she is justly entitled to the consideration asked for and hope she will be furnished with the transportation requested sigd J.
