The latter was forwarded to higher authority and approved previous to its delivery to Mr Cook. Action was taken in accordance with the same (74) seventy four tenants complied with the terms, and will remain for the present year only. Last year he had 192. one hundred and ninety two families on his land (Newton) which makes a reduction of (118) one hundred and eighteen families. The latter number have and with the assistance of transportation from this office the same was accomplished without suffering or dissatisfaction towards the Bureau, on the part of the Freedmen By this arrangement Mr Cook received within fifteen days $303 77/100 three hundred and three and 77/100 dollars. and $137 50/100 one hundred and thirty-seven 50/100 dollars for the First quarter rent of the present year and privilege of fire wood amount equal to the last named will be paid on or about the first of April Mr. Cook has agreed to the change of terms proposed by this office with great reluctance, and under protest It affords great satisfaction to be able to make so favorable a report of recent action as presented, and the alacrity with which the Freedmen met their obligations in this matter is a subject of Genl. congratulations to their friend Sigd. They are however very strict with her. which may have given rise to the report that she was ill treated. I do not think the mother would be self supporting if sent to Spottsylvania C.H.
