remark that if Capt. Barnes Asst Supt, at Suffolk requires a person to act as clerk and messenger. I do not consider the amt. of 25.00 per month excessive, but if he requires simply a messenger I think $25.00 per month too high a salary, as one can be hired at Richmond @ $12.00 per full month with rations which is equivalent to $20.00 per month.
