Richmond Va. Apl. 12. 67

Respectfully returned to Bvt. Maj. W. R. Morse Supt. the statement being that Mr. Hall made a contract for the support of Marshall during his life. for which he received, what was probably considered a sufficient consideration. and the laws of Va. requiring the contract to be enforced there is no reason known to these H.Q. for its being annulled. The case is rather that of the support of an aged pauper, than that of the purchase of a slave.

Respectfully returned to Maj J.R. Stone with the information that Bacons Castle is an excellent point to establish a school and the colored people in that vicinity are anxious for an appropriation from the Bureau to help them erect a building. the average daily attendance of scholars I think would not exceed fifty. I find upon investigation that Joseph Barrone [[margin note]] Indx as Baron? [[/margin note]] Sheriff of Surry Co. met Amelia Howard at Warrens store and they entered into conversation upon the subject of education and during the conversation she stated that she could take a boy (pointing to one that was standing near about 10 years of age) of that size and learn him his "A.B.Cs" and "A.B. also in two months upon that he called her a damned liar. Herbert Brown the colored man that Amelia Howard boards with, is of the opinion that Mr Barrone meant no harm by the language
