Respectfully returned to Maj: Genl O. O. Howard, Comr. inviting attention to enclosed report of Bvt: Maj: J. H. Remington, S.A. Comr.
Mr Nicholas was employed first by Mr Thos I. Jackson, Asst. Supt. 4th Divis: as clerk with my approval - as he was believed to have been a deserter from the Rebel service. I believe the reasons assigned by Maj: Remington for his situation and for not employing Mr Rapp, are correctly stated.

Respectfully returned to Bvt: Maj: W. R. Morse, S.A.C. 4th Dist. Va. Dick Hackley requests me to return this paper in the belief that further inquiry, based upon additional information herewith furnished, may result in the discovery of his children. He says Frank Hackley lives with Mr. Wm Utz near Salem, Roanoke county. John Hackley lives with a Mr Wood, about five miles from Bonsack Botetourt County. And Lewis Hackley lives one mile from Bonsack, probably by himself.
Dick Hackley & his wife are very old people very destitute, and in some measure dependent upon the Bureau for support. If their children are not able to send for them, I would respectfully apply for transportation to carry them to Roanoke or Botetourt, as the sons may determine.

Respectfully returned to Brig: Genl O. Brown, Asst. Comr. Va. with the statement that although the allowance of horses is already in the possession of the officer in charge of Howards Grove Hospital - that officer has received notice from Maj: White that two of the said horses must be returned which will leave but one at the Hospital - and the object of this paper is to provide for the necessities of the Hosp. when these horses are returned - as the hospital will then be left with a single horse.xx I respectfully add further that no more wagons are asked for within - only repairs necessary on those now on hand - and such repairs as will enable the Hospital to dispense with the two horses ordered away - provided the use, when needed can be had of the two horses in the City which were purchased for the use of the Hospital.
