H'd. Qrs. Mecklenburg, Co. Va.
Clarksville, April 25th 1867.

Respectfully returned to Brt: Maj: J. R. Stone, S.A.C. after diligent enquiry & a visit to the College, I find that in May 1865, the U.S. Troops occupied the buildings, to the number of 200 men, the destruction was then commenced. The Commanding Officer were successively- Capt. Hedges - K.Y.V. Capt. Suter - Ohio, Cav. & Lt. Garret, Comdg. A Co. from West Va.
The freedmen, in large numbers, congregated there immediately on the arrival of the U.S. Troops and remained as long as the command was there - some three or four months. The work of demolition seems to have been continued during that entire time.
The buildings - two of them, the "New building" & "Students Hotel" (used as a freedmen quarters & Hospital) are completely gutted, the plaster of the ceiling & walls, the windows glass and many sashes, the mantelpieces and doors being either broken so as to be useless or entirely gone.
In the College building proper the damage is not so great in extent except in one wing, in the lower rooms of which, horses have been stabled & have displaced the sleepers of the flooring. This seems to have been the work of all the Comdg. Officers.
