Office of the Board of Registration of
Amherst: Co. Va.
Amherst: C.H. Va. June 27th 67
Respectfully referred to Capt. R.S. Lacey, S.A.Comr. Lynchburg Va. It appears from the investigation I have made that the within applicant would be very acceptable to the Freedpeople of this region as a teacher. She is now teaching the freed children but she needs remuneration and the people can not afford it. There are a large number of colored people here & I think an instructor very necessary. If consistent with the rules of action of the Philadel. Society spoken of within, I would respectfully recommend that Mrs. Virginia. A. Chockley √ be employed by it.

Lynchburg, Va. July 6th 1867.
Respectfully forwarded thru Bvt: Brig: Gen'l O. Brown Asst. Comr.. Approved. It has been impracticable in the past to establish a school at Amherst, C.H. because of the opposition of the people to a "Yankee" teacher.
This may afford an opening and secure to the freedmen a means of educating themselves. Mr. Stradling the Supt. of Schools is now in this city and will investigate fully if desired by the society.
