Respectfully returned to Capt. W.P. Austin, S.A.C. with the information that the within named freedman is living with Mr. John Surface at Clover Hollow, near Newport, Giles Co. Va. He is very anxious to return to his former home in Ten. would have done so prior to this, but for want of the necessary funds to defray the expenses of his transportation. I have notified the parties indebted to John Whittey to settle with him forthwith, but the amnt. due him would not be sufficient to pay his way. Should it be decided to furnish him with the necessary transportation orders he leave here immediately on their receipt as he is under no written obligation to remain with the parties by whom he is now employed. The nearest station on the Va. & Ten R.R. is Christiansburg, Va.

Respectfully returned to Lt. P.R. Hambrick, Actg. S.A.C. The two women within referred to are former servants of Gen'l William Wickham and have been living with him since the fall of Richmond and without expense to the Govt. As this is their home, I have no doubt they will be able to make for themselves a comfortable support, if they are returned. They found money to go on the Alexandria for their children; but it seems had not a sufficiency to bring them back. They have relatives employed by Gen'l Wickham and will find no difficulty in obtaining work either of him or elsewhere, whenever they may desire it.

Respectfully returned to Bvt. Lt. Col. James Johnson, S.A.C. At the first interview I had with Andrew Banks, I asked him to what extent he would aid his sister and his children, He only could say "He would do the best he could for them" until such time as they could find Employment, I think he has the ability to support them for 3 or 4 months.
