33 among whom were Dr King [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] formerly owner of Issiah- and J.A. Rew. Justice of the Peace- both of Sageville Precinct- These gentlemen seemed to be very much interested in the case. and based their motives upon the fact of Issiahs having been a faithful and deserving servant. Besides they were thoroughly acquainted with the facts in the case relative to the trouble between Issiah & his wife, his arrest and being bound over to Keep the Peace. O'Brion signing his Bond - on condition that Issiah transfer his crop, farming implements and carpenter tools to him., and they leave the State of Mississippi. O'Brion assuming the payment of the $75.00 rent of land - I considered this transaction unfair from beginning to end- inasmuch as O'Brion simply signed the Bond. having been to no expense in the matter whatever and accordingly I attached the Cotton Crop of O'Brion (the same being stored in a warehouse in this City and liable to be disposed of any moment) to secure a just settlement of Issiah's Claim - I am of opinion that O'Brion had taken advantage of the freedmans ignorance of the Law, and frightened him off in order to secure his crop which was at the time, in a flourishing condition -- It appears that Mr C.M. Wilcox had served an attachment upon this Cotton of O'Brion's to secure rent prior to the one served by 34 me to secure the freedman's claim Mr O'Brion returned the chest of Carpenter tools to Issiah and paid him wages at the rate of $12.00 per mo for all labor performed upon the place before the transfer mentioned - As soon as a final settlement had been made between O'Brion and the freedman Issiah - I ordered the Deputy Sheriff (H.S. Patton) to sermon the attachment levied by me on the Cotton which was done -- Through som blunder of the Deputy Sheriff both Wilcox's attachment and my own were raised but not by my order as my Letter Book will show -- The Sheriff should have understood that I had nothing to do with the claim of Mr Wilcox -vs- O'Brion - Mr Wilcox called at this Office and requested me to take action in the case but I informed him that I had no jurisdiction in the matter between them I think it quite plain that there was a laborers claim against crop of O'Brion to, be adjudicated and that I have interfered in no way with the action of the Civil Authorities- Andrew Thomas- Agt- BRF. and AL
