Jany 2nd 74 [[strikethrough]] 73 [[/strikethrough]] Sir, I have the honor to submit the following report of the investigation made by me in obedience to instructions contained in endorsement from the A.G.O. of Dec. 19th 1873. On receipt of said endorsements it happened that on that day a man belonging to Co. "A" 35th US C T. came to my office to obtain some information as to his claim, and upon inquiry he informed me that he was well acquainted with Wilson Spellman of his company and telling me at the same time where a letter would find him. On receipt of this information. I at once communicated with Spellman to be reported to me a few days afterwards. I examined him according to confidential list furnished me. the result of this examination is respectfully submitted on form 41. - He says there were several Spellmans in his reg't one in Co "H" named Anthony Spellman, says he never received his $84.50 for bounty &c this he received in 1867 - says that Mr. Ritter of this place advanced him this amount on his claim that this is all the money he has ever received, from the Gov't since being discharged from the service - That he afterwards placed his papers in the hands of one Stonehouse of this city, to whom he paid $2.00 as fee. Has since that time heard nothing of his papers — holds a receipt from H. T. Stonehouse Gen'l-Claims Agent of this city dated Nov. 21st 1867 — for his discharge papers, which states that his papers were forwarded to Chipman & Hosmer at Washington, red ink mark in corner of same says "Bounty paid Nov 21st 67. on Certificate 317 625 which is 25 signed N. Ritter Agent, — He says he never made application to any such person as Mr. Brolen N.P. does not know any such man. Does not know Jacob Williamson C.C.P. before whom application of June 23rd 73 was executed. From my examination in this case I am led to the belief that Spellman of Co. H. & Co "A" 35th US C.T. are totally different persons Very respectfully Your obedient servant J H Counselman 1st Lieut and Adjt 1" Arty D.O.
