States that funds to pay the claim are in hands of Maj. La Motte D.O. and asks why the claim cannot be paid. Gives copy of correspondence/relative stmnts between Maj. L and the claimant. Wrapper. Referred by Hon J M Thornburgh, M.C and settled by Cert. No. 603.872. information requested. First Endorsement War Department, Adjutant Genls' Office. Mch.3/74 Respectfully referred to Maj R S La Motte 13th Inf. Disbursing Officer Nashville Tenn. for report, returning these papers to this office. In this connection attention is invited to "Memorandum" from this office of the 24th ult. directing disbursing officers wherever in their judgement a tour of payments would prove advantageous to report to this office. L.S. 8/175 Thomas M Vincent Assistant Adjutant General Second Endorsement. Respectfully returned with the report that the aggrieved party has stated the case pretty fully as to the correspondences on the subject with this office. He was informed that the money was here and he could get it by coming to Nashville or wait until I received orders to go to Knoxville. In order to facilitate payments I directed the parties to send in their Identification papers that I might have the vouchers made up, leaving nothing to do when I met them but to examine them and pay the money. If I were to enter upon an explanation in extense on the reasons for my method of transacting my business with every claimant who insists I should require additional clerical force. On the 27th of Feb. I wrote to the Adjt. Genl. stating the number of payments I would probably make if ordered out on a tour, leaving it to him to decide whether, with so small a number, it was advisable to go to the expense of the journey. Sally Crite has been written to May 2'73 - June 24th & Mar. 2 '74 but no reply received. From the evidence of the sons of the former master and that of Robt. Anthony 1st Supt. Co. H. who has a good reputation as a reliable & creditable person. I am decidedly of opinion that the claimant Joe Crite is the person he represents himself to be. The claimant & Anthony were brought together unexpectedly at my office. Neither one knowing of the other and after a few moments conversation each named the other. sg. R S La Motte Maj 13th Inf.D.O
