The number increases or diminishes as they find more objects of charity or good homes for those already under their care. The white orphans are taught by a teacher employed by Mrs. Phelps the colored ones attend the freedmen's school taught by Misses Howard and Townsend there are two hundred colored pupils in attendance and another large school might be established if rooms could be procured to teach in when Mrs Phelps moves the building the school will probably cease I heard no complaints of the negroes indolence the most of the citizens seem kindly disposed toward them at Rolla there is one freedmens school there are but few freedmen there no apparant difficulty between them and the white citizens, I arrived at St. Louis on the 23rd and having been a long time separated from my family I concluded to go home at once make an inspection of that portion of the state on my return which I did returning on the 23rd day of June. I visited the superintendent of public schools and other citizens whom I knew to be friendly to the cause and from reliable information received and personal observation, I am of the opinion that the
