freedmen are as fairly dealt with as we could expect them to be in a state so recently emerging from under slave codes. There have been ten or twelve schools in St. Louis during the last winter some taught by white teachers and others by colored ones those taught by the whites have generally proved more successful than those taught by freedmen there seems to be a lack of power of authority on the part of the latter. I remained in St. Louis until the 29th when I returned "via" way of Helena and Little Rock to this place arriving here on the 9th inst. The foregoing is all I have to report.
