[[underlined]] Nov. 8-11. [[/underlined]] [[underlined with red pencil]] Water color. Barn, at Paterson, [[/underlined]] by the river, in afternoon light. The sketch in Castells was made rapidly and only for the sake of the simple motif in beautiful pure hues, of large masses and tone contrasts; the pale blue and rose sky, the light yellow-rose roof, the light pure yellow meadow, the fine light turquoise blue river, its white and orange bank, white houses in the distant woods, the brilliant orange & red light on the barn, its purple & blue gable shadow and so that of the road, with a lilac fence. - Hence on a scene of common objects and within daily experience, usually unnoticed, at that hour a brilliant colouring by the Sun produces [[underlined]] unity [[/underlined]] of composition and expression. It is easy to draw it and colour it, as either existing, with [[underlined]] the grey [[/underlined]] pervading all color. Then it [[insertion]] would [[/insertion]] have, [[insertion]] however [[/insertion]], even if painted well, little interest. It is also easy to [[wavy underlined]] draw [[/underlined]] it as seen, and add the colors of impression, leaving out the grey, and I so drew it up on tissue paper as a preparation of perspective, completing the outlines of the scene into some picture (adding a tree, a fence, a barn), and of the color masses. But it is not satisfactory, it being still the scene of no special interest. It was sketched, that day, merely for the effect of the pictorial colorite, summarily, loosely. The converting into a picture should retain and emphasize this [[underlined]] pictorial unity. The idea [[/underlined]] is a general feeling of beautiful color at that hour and season, experienced, while I wandered carefree thro' the countrylike suburb, hence a very general [[underlined]] Empfindung [[/underlined]]. The naturalness of the scene when executed, however, fastens upon the eye and mind too firmly that barn, that road, those objects: all of no interest. Yet, if they were not as such recognizable, the mere assemblage of similar color composition would have [[underlined]] no meaning [[/underlined]] since the mind would not experience [[underlined]] any feeling [[/underlined]].
