28. to a "T". He is a chip of the old block, as his father was one of the best that was ever in the business. In 1900 I was sent to the headquarters again and I began to look after the horses and do that kind of work. Charlie Hambrick, a prominent man at that time, was foreman of the farm. The old ranch was fast disappearing and in its place the prairies were becoming fields of grain instead of vast expanses of grass growing wild. He was foreman of the farm for several years and a good, allaround fellow. He would help a man in any way possible. Ed Trice, a fine farmer lad at that time, was on the place also. They both would do anything for me that I would ask. I gave as freely to them and I could and they as freely accepted. They were as good as brothers to me and I always long to see them and to talk with them of the old days on the farm as it use to be when we were there together. In the breeding season I made some good stock for them and handled things about as they should have been handled. One of the horses turned out was "Tabba Tosca". I have his picture which was given me for a Christmas present. These $6000 and $7000 horses and are hard to get and I can't throw them away and I am sure that you will see that we get the best there is to get from the bunch and train them as they should be trained." I had to have training to handle horses right and I had had all of that kind of experience that was necessary to make race horses what I thought they should be. There is a trick in the trade when one comes to handling race horses just as there is in any other business. It takes time, pateince and experience and a man can't do anything of that kind in a minute either. There was "Tabba Tosca", he had money placed to his credit in 1903 and 1904 when
