6. it has been my experience that pottery is rarely found in earth tumuli. I never, except in one instance, have encountered any, and then it was in the form of sepulchral urns.

111. In 1849 I had given me, on the western coast of Mexico, an interesting antique relief from the Capital, and in 1854 a small head of an animal from a ruined pyramid in the state of Guerrero. The former is a well carved miniature stone face, found accidentally, near the surface of the ground, on the site of the traditional ruins of a portion of the palace of Montezuma, and which I append a photograph of the natural size. The other, likewise a miniature in stone, is of quaint design, and, when presented to me, the eyes were formed of roughly polished rubies, which were afterward unhappily lost.
