that a party fitted out with the proper appliances for the special purpose of investigating the tumuli in Florida, would be able to make developments of great historic interest and, perhaps, obtain matter of no small value to the student of prehistoric remains.
   My investigations were carried on at a disadvantage, and covered a trifling area compared to that remaining to the explorer. 
   It is greatly to be regretted that many of these examinations have been made in a desultory and unsystematic manner and that much important material has been lost by being scattered, as objects of mere temporary curiosity, among those who could neither comprehend their import nor appreciate their value.
