July 19. Two [[underline]] Clostera americana [[/underline]] [[male symbol]] came out from larvae found near Champaign. Therefore here, as well as in Georgia, the species is double-brooded, [[symbol]] New England. (See Harris) It also feeds here, as in Georgia, on willow as well as poplar.

July 27. ^ [[insertion]] Agrotidous "Prodenia n. sp" Grote [[/insertion]] Grass. caterpillar (on corn) recd. from [[Dassy?]] went underground July 18 & came out July 27 (9 days only). Burrows into corn-stems much like [[underline]] Gortyna zeae, [[/underline]] but from the outside; eats leaves also. 
  
  Length 1.10 - 1.50. Color pale brown to pale dirty green. A paler dorsal & subdorsal line & immediately below the latter & just above ^ [[insertion]] ^ & almost encloses [[/insertion]] the stigmata a

broad dusky stripe 1/3 [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] as broad as each segments is long. ^ [[insertion]] On jts. 2 - 12 [[/insertion]] In the centre of this stripe [[strikethrough]] ^ [[/strikethrough]] a shining black tubercle &, ^ [[insertion]] on jts. 2 - 10, [[insertion]] between dorsal & subdorsal lines 2 smaller tubercles, arranged transversely on jts. 2 & 3, but sloping downwards & backwards on jts. 4 - 10 [[image]], all these tubercles bearing hairs. On jt. 11 the 4 tubercles are arranged in a square & on jt. 12 they slope downwards & forwards [[image]]

Anal plate without any tubercles, but with the 3 paler lines & shining blackish. Joint 1 as anal plate. Beneath the broad dusky stripe an indistinct pale stripe, 1/2 its breadth but 2 1/2 times as wide as the pale dorsal & subdorsal lines. On jts. 1 - 3, a large shining pale brown tubercle above each leg; on jts. 4 [[strikethrough]] & 6 [[/strikethrough]] ^ [[insertion]] - 12 [[/insertion]] two smaller ones sloping downwards & backwards, all bearing hairs. Head pale brown ^ [[insertion]] (or pale dirty green) [[/insertion]] mottled with black, the submargin behind ^ [[insertion]] prongs & [[strikethrough]] [[ma?]] [[/strikethrough]] each side them of [[/insertion]] the [[image]] black. Legs & prolegs ^ [[insertion]] normal, [[/insertion]] immaculate, save that tips of latter are blackish where hooks come. [[strikethrough]] Legs normal [[/strikethrough]] greenish specimens stripe &c paler.

July 27. Examined medicated boughs from p. 85. ^ [[insertion]] New scales now full-sized & contain underneath them [[female symbol]] as described by Riley. Scraped a lot off into hand (several times over) from each bough, & found [[female symbol]] as follows:
