[[underlined]] May 29. [[underlined]] Leaves of [[underlined]] Carya alba [[underlined]] now just about fully developed. Found lots of the stem-inhabiting Lepid. larvae in [[strikethrough]] fo [[strikethrough]] midrib [[image]] about 1/2 inch long, & brown. = "Caryae habitaculum" Walsh

Also - a single [[underlined]] Caryaevenae [[underlined]] gall. Slit ^ [[insertion]] entirely [[/insertion]] closed, but visible. Inside full-grown mother louse & one egg. Venter 5-jd., as she tried to lay another ^ [[insertion]] egg [[/insertion]] under the lens. Ant. 3-jd, 3rd twice (1st + 2nd). Color body dull greenish white; 2 black ocelli; eyes black, apparently simple & scarcely larger than ocelli. Tarsi 1-jd., claws apparently (in one tarsus) two.

  May 30. Barklice (imported) hatching out pretty freely. Noticed many ^ [[insertion]] (12 or over) [[/insertion]] [[underline]] Chilocorus bivalves [[/underline]] moving about slowly among them: ^ [[insertion]] also saw them a week afterwards [[/insertion]] also a [[underline]] Scymnus? [[/underline]] or Hyperaspis? larva, 1 specimen on twig close to them.

[ A  [[underline]] bivittata [[/underline]] borer apparently in crotch of y. bellflower: the characteristic [[underline]] faeces. [[/underline]] Found it next day, killed. ]

Many eggs still under scales, unhatched: a few young locomotive larvae also under scales.

No. 1 Kerosene: effectual. No larvae

No. 2 Benzine.  Not very effectual: 1/3 or [[insertion]] perhaps [[/insertion]] 2/3 larvae.

No. 3 Linseed oil: effectual: no larvae

No. 4 Linseed oil + tar: [[effectual: no larvae]]

No. 5 Lard: [[effectual: no larvae]]

No. 6 Benzine + tar: Not very effectual. Say 1/3 larvae.

No. 8 Soft Soap: [[Not very effectual]].

May 30. Larvae of [[underline]] Trochilium polistiforme [[/underline]] (from Ky.) Length 1 1/4 inch. Color ^ [[insertion]] of body [[/insertion]] pellucid greenish white, with extensive curdy-white bowel-like markings, occupying nearly all the body but a dorsal line on jts. 4 - 12. Joints with an indistinct horny plate tinged in front with tawney yellow, & two divergent striae [[image]] on hind 1/2. Legs tinged at tip with same color, & rising from large bulges. Prolegs each pair represented by two ^ [[insertion]] nearly [[/insertion[[ confluent bulges ^ [[insertion]] each [[/insertion] with a double transverse series of about 10 fuscous flat teeth [[image]], separated by a furrow, which opens & shuts. On joint 10 forward row of teeth consist of only 2 or 3. None at all on anal jts, the terminal 1/2 of which a pale greenish white with no curdy markings. Head retractile; tawney at tip & at extreme tip, as well as mouth, fuscous. Spiracles normal.

May 31. Some larvae still locomotive. But few larvae on branches soaped in November; they sprout vigorously.
