Havilah, Kern County, Cal.
We left Kernville soon after noon to-day, after having our horses shod and my cart-axle mended. We took the road to Caliente, retracing our yesterday's course to the fork of the river, and going thence southward over a spur of the Sierras into [[strikethough]] Walkers Basin; and over another divide into [[/strikethough]] the valley in which Havilah lies. The river turns westward a mile or two below the fork and was seen no more for the remainder of the journey.
The change to interior flora is complete as we begin to ascend the first Sierran spur south of the fork.  The characteristic vegetation of the hill slopes after leaving the valley bottom is
