Ch'iu, Mr. Tung's younger brother Kuang-lien (who had already proved himself useful to us in many ways), and I took the train for Hsin-yang Hsien.  We arrived there an hour or so after midnight of the 21st, and found Mr. Tung awaiting us.  During the forenoon of the same day, with some difficulty (since the season for the rice-planting had come and laborers were in consequence scarce), he found traveling-chairs for our party and wheelbarrows for our luggage and equipment;  for we were now in a part of China where carts were not used.  We thus set out for the small town of Yu Ho Chên [[3 Chinese characters]] , some 50 [[underline]] li [[/underline]]---about 17 miles---to the northwest and close to the tomb which we wished to excavate.
  In the distance to the west and southwest loomed the serrated ranges of the T'ung-pai [[2 Chinese characters]] Shan, the limpid but steamy atmosphere
