water scene attributed to the Sung artist Kwakki (Jap. pron.), and a bird painting by Jakusetsu.
Best of all were the small paintings, about fourteen in number, contained in a famous album purchased for the Musuem by Dr. Kummel in Kyoto. It contains undoubted examples (1) of the very flower of Sung work of the more delicate sort.
My talk with Dr. Kummel brought out some important points concerning the probable attitude of the German scholars in regard to our proposed school. I was far from finding any expression of ill-will--quite the contrary was the case. Nevertheless, I feel certain that our best policy would be to ask no favors in Germany and to suggest cooperation only on special occasions which may arise in the future, and when circumstances demand it.
On the other hand it will be necessary for the staff of the School to keep in touch with German discoveries and German publications.
(1) Several reproduced in Tajima's "Selected Relics."
