[[underline]] SALARIES OF THE FRENCH SCHOOL AND THE PROPOSED AMERICAN SCHOOL. [[/underline]]

The yearly salaries of the staff of the French School are as follows:
     Director, frs. 21,000.
     Staff, frs. 10,000 to 14,000.
Fellowships from France, frs. 6, 000.
Besides these sums, they are entitled to lodging while in Hanoi, transportation to and from France, and transportation and frs. 15 a day while in the field.
I have considered these figures in making my recommendations for the salaries of the American staff, but find conditions of living in the capital of China so different from those at the little colonial town of Hanoi that I have been forced to raise the standard. In making this decision I have also been influenced by the somewhat different purposes of our school from that of the French and the fact that our future will depend largely on our being able to attract the best men at the start.
I therefore submit the following list of yearly salaries for the approval of your committee with the suggestion that some old resident of Peking,- as for instance the Hon. E.T. Williams, now in Washington,- be further consulted in the matter.
     Director, $7,000.
     Regular staff, $2,000 to $3,500
     Fellows from America, $1,000.
