Chinese written language, with such further attendance in courses on Oriental archaeology, art and history presented at the College de France or elsewhere as may be considered advisable to relieve the strain of continuous attention to the written characters.
At the end of this year the three students will take up residence at the School headquarters in Peking, there to work with native teachers on the spoken language and to continue their studies of reading and writing.  It has been the common experience that European methods of teaching are superior to native ones for beginners, but that after the rudiments are grasped, no language training can surpass that which is received from constant communication with educated Chinamen.
While these students are in residence at Peking their services will be available to the Director who will supervise their studies and direct their reading.  He will find that they can assist him in such matters as the cataloguing of the library and the sorting of material sent in by field workers.  The students will use the time not spent with their teachers or otherwise allotted by the Director in the reading of history and the study of archaeology and art, both from books and the examination of available objects.
From time to time it will be found possible for them to accompany the archaeologists on short expeditions, and avail themselves of these opportunities to acquire a knowledge of field methods.  When excavation is in progress they will be found use-
