natural bent, and will show a desire to specialize in his studies. This should be permitted, under the guidance of the Director, wherever it does not interfere with the course of training which it is desirable that every member of the staff should undergo. 
[[new paragraph/indent]]It will thus be possible to obtain by the third year of the life of the School, not only the field archaeologists who have been working since its start and are now familiar with the special problems of China; but certain young men with sufficient training to be of great assistance in the library on matters connected with investigations into history, archaeology and literature and certain others who may be trusted to conduct independent investigations in the field. 
[[new paragraph, indent]]From the end of the second year of training, if the Director considers that any of the three students has profited by his experience to a sufficient degree, he may recommend him to be appointed on the regular staff with a salary of fifteen hundred dollars, with travelling expenses paid and field outfit supplied as well as field cook and coolie. 
[[new paragraph, indent]]I have ascertained from the Director of the Ecole Francaise d'Extreme-Orient in Hanoi that our institution may recommend students who will be allowed to study in the School in Indo-China. That this concession is one of great value will be realized by the fact that the only Fellowships to Hanoi from France are allotted to certain carefully chosen men from among the ranking scholars of the Ecole des Langues Orientales Vivantes,
