l7a.

My conversations with Bishop Roots of Hankow, Bishop Graves of Shanghai and Dr. Hawkes Pott of St. Johns University in Shanghai, all proved to be of the utmost service in forming
my opinions and aiding me in making my recommendations to the Committee.

It is at the suggestion of the latter gentleman,
and with the hearty approval of the other two, that I present my proposal for the language training of the staff in its present form. Their experience in the training of young missionaries and ministers gave their ideas particular weight in my mind, and I have adopted their suggestions as being formed on
years of experience in the very problem which is to engage our earliest attention.

They expressed the greatest interest in our work
and volunteered to help my campaign for interesting the missionaries stationed in the various provinces of China.
