at each distance until at the distance of about two feet all signes of magnetism disappeared.  The magnetism was constantly in the same direction as that of the current from the battery  no change of direction could be observed.  The magnetism disappeared at that distance on account principally of the oblique action of the two sides of the coil.

Exp 3rd   [[image--[[underline]] a [[/underline]] double line circle (as of wire) with a smaller circle inside.  This inner circle has two lines extending outward with 'handles' on the ends. The shocking  spiral was put within the upper coil  the two ends of which were not in contact. The shock at the distance of 16 inches was very disagreeable  The ends of the coil [[underline]] a [[/underline]] were not placed in contact  no effect or a very slight one was now perceptable (good exp)

Exp  Put the compound lever on the large magnet magnetized it [[by?]] the large battery arranged as 8 plats, suffered the whole to remain until next morning (May 30) found that it required 621 lbs to detach the armature.  The exp was made by means of a sliding weight.

Arranged the coils and one helix (the 2nd) for producing the secondary shock.  attempted to get the direction of the current but did not succeed either by decomposition or making magnets --
     Separated the helix from which the shocks were produced by means of blocks from the coil to the distance of 7 or 8 inches still the effect was produced  So that the 2nd current acts[[^ing]] at a distance produces shocks similar to the battery current.
     When the two handles were rubbed together sparks were produced from the tertiary current
     I am anxious to produce some [[decisive?]] evidence of the direction of the tertiary current since I now suspect that its direction is opposed to that of the secondary current and that the streaming effect is produced in the same [[manner?]] as in the case of common electricity -- may not the first discharge act like the large battery (Dr. Hares) and produce currents always in the same direction and may not the current thus

Lectures to the class have prevented any experiments until today July 11th 1838
Tried the following exp. Put a quantity of lamp oil into a glass vessel, connected [[image - of glass beaker half full of liquid with wires going from the liquid to the left and the right]] one end of a wire with the large machine of the college, the other placed above the surface of the oil.  Also held in hand another wire at the same distance above the surface.
When the machine was turned a depression was formed under each wire as if the oil were repelled.
When the ends were plunged into the oil a violent motion was observed from each point producing currents apparently in the oil at the same time [[strikethrough]] the oil [[/strikethrough]] a film of oil was seen to be repelled up the side of the wire and then thrown off in a spray in some cases on all sides but most generally in straight lines to the sides of the glass thus --
