We are now in
   Latitude  60°-20'-00" N.
   Longitude 58 -47' 20" W.
     and becalmed.
The distance now to run to get to Holsteinberg is about [[underline]] 430 [[/underline]] miles NNE (true)
   After supper we attempted soundings but failed to reach bottom with 330 fathom line.
Capt. B. says that in 1858 the

place we are now sailing, [[strikethrough]] [[ran?]] [[/strikethrough]] was closely packed with ice. Now, not a sign of ice appears. The water is 40° - & Air 40° tho' at Meridian in the Sun, Air was 70°!
Life appears in abundance as we approach the Arctic Circle - Hundreds of game birds are around us continually.

Last night a "Sulphur bottom" - Balæna Physalis was seen near the vessel.

It is now 12 o'clock [[insertion]] night, [[/insertion]] by [[underlined]] Civil [[/underlined]] time the dividing line lat. June 28th & June 29th, 1860 - & yet quite light.
