In the afternoon of Sunday 5 O'Clock large numbers of Humpback whales were seen around the "George Henry". The boats were lowered & for three long hours did the whalers pursue their [[insertion]] usual [[/insertion]] avocation, but in vain, for the whales were too shy of their pursuers It was [[insertion]] a time of [[/insertion]] strange contrast with that of the morning! I could not but think, 'Buried at Sea [[insertion]] of a companion [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] in the [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]]Sunday [[/insertion]] Morning Hump-back Whaling Sunday Afternoon! I must in justice make this a record that I believe it is a general custom among whalers to whale every day in the week, not only by Americans but those of [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] other nations.
[[strikethrough]] No [[/strikethrough]] The [[underlined]] 'General custom' [[/underlined]] does not [[insertion]] make [[/insertion]] a wrong right, yet I will confirm one thing: Human Nature is a hard old fellow to deal with - he is so strong that Solomon, Sampson & even the good deciples were overpowered by him. On a [[insertion]] certain [[/insertion]] momentous occasion [[insertion]] familiar to all [[/insertion]] the Savior

had commanded some of his diciples to watch with him, - & while he prayed [[strikethrough]] awhile [[/strikethrough]] they fell asleep. [[strikethrough]] For [[/strikethrough]] Three several trials were made but every time Human nature - the weakly flesh, [[strikethrough]] came [[/strikethrough]] sleep, conquered the willing spirit [[strikethrough]] "watch & pray". [[/strikethrough]] of the good diciples. [[insertion]] see: Matthew XXVI. 36-46 [[/insertion]] I make this reference in profound respect to the scriptures. Now when the [[insertion]] [[strikethrough]] immense great [[/strikethrough]] [[/insertion]] [[insertion]] numerous great [[/insertion]] Whales came around the "George Henry" this afternoon [[insertion]] blowing & [[/insertion]] blowing [[strikethrough]] inviting [[/strikethrough]] [[[insertion]] which seemed to signify [[/insertion]] as it were 'Come & take us if you [[underlined]] dare [[/underlined]] & [[underlined]] can [[/underlined]]', it was "[[underlined]] tempting [[/underlined]]" - to Yankee's at least, especially when the Yankee's knew that [[insertion]] each [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] every [[/strikethrough]] whale they saw around them, would count them 3 to 4000 Dollars in train oil - & [[insertion]] the best of [[/insertion]] Hoop material for the ladies - Whalebone. Then the temptation of gain is not all. How many men [[insertion]] -gentlemen- of your city[[/insertion]] love to go 'afishing' for the spirit of it? there is no [[insertion]] exhilirating [[/insertion]] excitement in the world that will compare with that attendant upon the capturing [[insertion]] of [[/insertion]] Whales
