Thursday July 5th 1860

Commenced Cod-fishing this morning on the same ground - Caught a Halibut & several "Cod". [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] The whole weight about 200 lbs. in 2 hours.  [[strikethrough]] A [[/strikethrough]] The morning was still Foggy so that we were unable to proceed.  An observation was obtained at 12 which made us in Lat 66° - 12' N. just 46 miles short of being up to Holsteinberg.
Commenced at once to beat up to the windward determining to reach H. soon as possible. In three hours (3 O'clk) the cry "Sail-O!" rang thro' the ship. Got a view of the "Mariane" which we had seen on the 26th of June ^ [[insertion]] in Lat 58-11-28 [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] who's [[/strikethrough]] Its course was same as ours.
At 4 O'Clock two Esquimaux in their Kyaks were seen coming at Stern

speed toward the "George Henry." I ran on deck - & away at the distance of two miles  I saw them skipping prettily on the rough waters. In less than 8 minutes they were being hoisted, Kyacks & all, into our ship.  When within speaking distance of us they lessened their speed [[insertion]][[strikethrough]] [[ 4 words?]] [[/strikethrough]] [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] took off their [[/strikethrough]], threw [[insertion]] back their [[/insertion]] hoods, bowed politely(!) their heads & cried out "America! America!" on Capt. B. answering "Aye!"- swifter than ever did they speed to us.
