And now who are the artists this democracy is to choose? Your program is vital, but who is to say who are the artists to carry it out? Under given conditions compromise is inevitable. Artists coming from relief, perhaps 90% are artists only by a great stretch of the imagination, -self-labelled artists. As a member of the local committee I have found myself compromising when a work came up for vote of acceptance. If the work was not actually bad I voted "yes" because
