Hall and I went to University Club.  George is to day fifteen years old. At his age I was [[strikethrough]] already [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] I believe in the same mental condition as he is with the difference that he has had the benefit of better intellectual environment.  I had to do everything by myself and find my own way. The only help I had was the encouragement of my beloved mother. There were fifteen candles burning on the cake which was served this evening at dinner.

February.8. Milder weather and thaw, then snow. We made a run? of Varnish 100 kilos and I began to put some shape in library of laboratory by classing my samples. Stocks have dropped still further during these last days. My

paper losses since purchasing these 300 shares [[insertion]] for which I paid in full as usually [[/insertion]] amount already to way over $3000! outside of depreciation of the stock I had. This stock market is a disheartening and demoralizing game!
I feel entirely well again. No dizziness nor headache to day.
Feb. 9. Schroeder of J McKenna' came here and told me wanted to use B for making [[underlined]] paint remover with acetone [[/underlined]]. Gave him samples he wanted and some advice.
Feb. 10. Busy as usually
Feb. 11. Went to New York first to [[S.I. Peters?]] then Seligsberg then to D & F. Co then [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] then to meeting Am. Chem Society. This was the evening of the Physiologist [[underlined]] Dr. Levesse & Lusk [[/underlined]] read papers; Impresses me as much noise for nothing. I believe these people live in a very narrow circle and seldom come in
