[[strikethrough]] Very [[/strikethrough]] Beautiful residences surrounded by gardens and orange groves, irrigation everywhere. Most beautiful drives. City looks the most opulent city I have ever seen. everything most tastefully arranged. The garden of [[space left blank, he may have meant Alfred Smiley]] proprietor of lake Mohonk Hotel in the East, the famous quaker-philanthropist was specially attractive. He conceived the idea of irrigating the place by using the waters from the mountain range and thus transformed the arid plain into a fertile valley of unusual loveliness, bringing comfort and prosperity. Can hardly imagine there are only about 12000 inhabitants. Everything well

kept and cared for and tastefully arranged. Back in the train then later in the afternoon arrived at Riverside. This even surpasses Redlands. Motor car drive around the city which looks much bigger than a city of 12000 inhabitants. Beautiful well cared for, [[strikethrough?]]sta[[strikethrough]] large eucalyptus, [[strikethrough]] ma[[strikethrough]] palms, magnolias and pepper trees. excellent  macadamized streets.  A succession of fine residences surrounded by well irrigated orange groves. I never dreamt that such a thing existed in this world. Certainly the most prosperous, best cared for and most tastefully arranged city I ever saw. A triumph of human industry over nature created gardens out of blank torrid soil; where even sagebrush cannot stand the baking rays of the sun.
