July 17. Had to get up early so as to catch the ferry at 8:15 A.M. Hard work for many of us. Visit to Swiss Italian Wine Colony at Asti. Fearfully hot in train but dry heat. Fertile country, but all grass [[strikethrough]] burned [[/strikethrough]] dried out. Peaches, apples, grape vines everywhere. Mr. [[Reoin]] ^[the chemist] and Mr. Sbarboro recieved us generously.
Lunch under arbor. abundantly irrigated by wine. Temperance speeches as to value of wine for combating drunkenness. Was called upon to speak to, and got along all right. Hidden sprinklers in garden. Back at about

8 P.M. eight, cold wind seemed great contrast to warm day. Ferry boat entirely filled with people who came back from enjoying a days vacation. Cheerful people none of the dry close-up sundays of the East. This population is undoubtedly made of better material than that of [strikeout] Chicago [/strike out] New York and specially that of Chicago. Some of us took supper at a small French restaurant called [[ Jacks?]] then all [strike out] went [/strike out] walked home.
July 18, Packed trunks then attended to tickets then home to Palo Alto. 
[[margin]] Palo-Alto[[margin]]. Mr. Franklin who has invited us is ill at the Hotel but Mrs. Franklin expected us for lunch with Alexander Smith of Chicago, his wife and Herty. Celine
