July 22. Up early left with steamer to Van Couver at 9. AM. Herty went to Tacoma. Dudley and

us two in party. Rather crowded steamer. Wooded [[strikethrough]] I [[/strikethrough]] islands Cloudy weather. Types of miners. Lunch aboard. Arrived at Victoria after noon. Celine and myself were driven around clean neat quiet town. Some pretty government buildings. 6000 chinese. chinese quarter seems cleaner and more orderly than anywhere else. Head tax of $500 on chinese since some months. After 45 minutes drive came aboard our steamer found 2d class smoking room invaded by chinamen all dressed in american style, small tall thin and thick. Same landscape - islands, rocky shore and woods. Madrona trees still prominent.
Prettiest point is narrows which cut one of the islands All this seems unsettled and covered with splendid woods Later on entrance in Van Couver
