Birds, 52 species are peculiar to Jamaica, 57 others known to occur continually and 52 others occasionally. Turkey vultures are very common, and one hawk occurs, the Jamaica Red-Tail. I think I saw one or two near Beacon Hill, near Bath. There was also a hawk dead in the road near Lucea, but I failed to notice any red colouring.
Fish, 331 [[strikethrough]]fish[[/strikethrough]] species [[strikethrough]]are[[/strikethrough]] were known in 1892; 117 Crustacea listed in 1897, ( Decapods only).
Reptiles; 14 frogs, one fresh-water turtle, one crocodile ( [[underline]] Crocodilus acutus [[/underline]] ), nineteen lizards, and five snakes. The lizards and snakes that live on the ground are not all rare, owing [[strikethrough]]the[[/strikethrough]] to the mongoose. Land shells,500 species of land + fresh -water mollusca.
