July 7 - Sunday
Rained as we cooked breakfast. Afterwards partially cleared, with white clouds in valley southward.
Flats were snow covered, had difficuty finding trail. Deep snow banks in ravines. Beautiful valley to left. High on opposite mtn. is Goat Lake, never melts, great cascade below, about 1800 ft. total fall.
Goar Rock's peaks above to right. Fog and rain arrived as we reached Packwood Glacier. Aspect wild. Base of Ranier showing beyond Glacier, under clouds. Butte mtn. ridge ahead showed many snow patches below Knife edge crest.
Decided to turn back and bypass until later. Returned across snow covered Flats to shelter. Descended trail to Chambers Lake. Got ride to town with family.. Stopped in motel in Packwoord (P.R. Johnson)
