Friday 20th July 1860
This morning, after breakfast, Mr Rogers Boat crew ^[[insertion]] (6 in all) [[/insertion]] went off fishing in Davis Strait.. They returned VII O'clock this eve with 9 Halibut & Cod-fish - all together weighing 2000 lbs.! One of the Halibut weighs 300 lbs. No place in the world where life is more cheaply or better supported than here in the Arctic Regions. I see no reason why a man cannot be as happy here as anywhere. I am sure I could be. Give me honest people to deal with - to live with. The community here is an honest & happy one.
The two sons ^[[insertion]] of the Superintendant or former  Lt. Gov. [[/insertion]] with their [[strikethrough]] wif [[/strikethrough]] wives & children (6 such) started to-day for a [[strikethrough]] tu [[/strikethrough]]two months journey North to Kill deer. They were all in the oomiak except one of the men who kept along side in [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] his kyack.
From the two heads of these families. I purchased

my ^[[insertion]] sledge [[/insertion]] dogs, harnesses, traces, whip & ^[[insertion]] dog [[/insertion]] food. In the oomiak were tent-skins & every thing necessary for an Esquimaux's convenience.
These seem Aristocratic Esquimaux - well off. Every thing in good order. Kyacks in trim order for Hunting & sealing, whaling etc. The oomiak [[strikethrough]] & all on board [[/strikethrough]] came along side & all the women & children came on board.
Done some trading for meal, tobacco, pants etc. then bid farewell to us and left.
Visited Gov. Elbery to-day - called ^[[insertion]] with him [[/insertion]] on Mrs Kjer & Miss Bulow [[strikethrough]] with the Gov. [[/strikethrough]]
The Social Glass - fine Maderia - The well stocked vault. Gov. E's special enquiry of the wine made in Cincinnati. The Gov. goes out to the blacksmith's shop Brings in Capt B. He is presented with 4 Bottles Wine etc. by the Mrs Kjer the Minister's wife.
Miss Bulow reads Esquimaux to me. The Minister's servant reads the A.B.C. - Its pronunciation not according to American sound!
