(Horizon) Line water
At 12 (Meridian) to-day a beautiful coincidence happened - While taking the Altitude of the sun for the Latitude the "Rescue" was within the reflected image of sun as thrown out to the horizon by my Sextant. The "Rescue" was some 2 miles [[strikethrough]] this side of the[[/strikethrough]] within the circle of the horizon. - [[strikethrough]][[illegible]] [[/strikethrough]] exactly in Zenith line with the Meridian Sun - therefore as I used the [[strikethrough]] [[?]][[/strikethrough]] shaded glasses of the instrument attempting 1st the Crimson 2d the purple - 3d the green - 4th the deep red, the "Rescue" had the appearance of sailing in a circular element of same hue.

Tuesday, July, 31st 1860

This has been a busy day with me - one in which I hope I had made some progress in gaining knowledge.

During a portion of the morning I made a sketch of "Saunderson's Town". At Meridian, I determined [[strikethrough]] in Long [[/strikethrough]] ^[[insertion]] the [[/insertion]] Latitude to be [[underlined in red]] 64°-19'-57" [[/underlined in red]] N. & [[strikethrough]] at[[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] about [[/insertion]] 4 O'Clock PM. determined also, [[strikethrough]] its[[/strikethrough]] ^[insertion]] the [[/insertion]] Longitude to be [[underlined in red]] 64°-37'-05" W. [[/underlined in red]] W.
The basis of establishing this Long. was [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] as follows:

                                 h m s
  By Chronometer } VIII - 20 - 47 = 29° - 12'
  Greenwich time } VIII - 21 - 22 = 29° - 09'
(Note fast this day=58 seconds)VIII - 21 - 50 = 29° - 05'

^[[insertion]] We were [[/insertion]] Distant from "Saunderson's [[insertion]] Town", East (true)' [[/insertion]] 11 1/2 miles
