destroyed like everything by the fire. Went walking literally all day. Fishermen's wharf. Barbary Coast and late in evening went together to little French restaurant. Cracked Crab, Sanddabs ^[[Shrimp]] and Sole are the well known specialties of San Francisco.. A very interesting day.
July 21. Up early. Packed my valises. Then went walking and went in a bookstore where I bought a supply of books. Returning I met [[red underline]] Cahn [[/red underline]] on the street, took him and [[red underline]] Ralph Gould [[/red underline]] to lunch at the Palace. Then Cahn drove with me to the [[red underline]] Tenyo Maru. [[/red underline]] Then found telegram from [[red underline]] Celine [[/red underline]] delivered July 18. Basket of fruit from [[red underline]] Toch [[/red underline]] and case of California wines from [[red underline]] Lachman. [[/red underline]] Steamer overrun with Japs of every description. All of them looking

clumsy or grotesque in their western suits. A fat Chinaman in golfing cap and his wife in Chinese trousers and slit overshirt etc. Rugged shores along golden Gate then at a distance the Faralone islands like sharksteeth. Bell for dinner. few white passengers. look most like missionaries or wives of missionaries. This will probably be a very uninteresting voyage. Steamer has very much the appearance of [[strikethrough]] steamer [[/strikethrough]] atlantic steamers of twenty years ago. Many things rather clumsy and not well cared for. Food poor quality and poorly prepared; all this too much imitation of western ways. with poor success. ^[[Chinese]] Steward boys at table now seen in long white slit blouse like a long night shirt. This makes them look much better than in their clumsy inadapted imitation of american steamer waiters. Menu very poorly printed. Dishes marked
