May 22nd Thursday

We began our lessons to-day. Only two hours a day, which certainly is not hard compared with what we had in New York. The time passed very quickly with English, French and German.
We went to the Nouveau Cirque in the afternoon. Chocolate was very good. There was a woman "La belle Geraldine" who was very good. She got up on a bar way at the top of the house and swung, hung by her feet, her heels, and did all sorts of dreadful things. She was really quite pretty, and seemed much to nice for the part
she took.

May 23rd. 1890. Friday.

After my lessons to-day I went for a walk, and to see the stores. Paris stores are certainly very attractive, much more so than those in America and even in London.
Adele asked me to drive with them this afternoon, and so I did. Their governess is French and (pretty) nice. Jolly, and very agreeable. The bois was lovely; the trees are all out which ad^[[insertion]] d [[/insertion]]s much to the its beauty. As it was rather early we did not see very many people, but Paris is
always full enough.
