June 6th. 1890. Friday.
To-day Fraulein and myself started off on an excursion alone. The train for Fontainbleau left at half past ten. This we took, and arrived there at twelve. We took a stage for the English and French Hotel where we had a simple breakfast. It had been raining since we left Paris but this did not keep us from walking to the palace which is just opposite the hotel. The palace is very interesting for Marie Antoinette lived there for some time. Napolian I (whom I admire and dislike) also had his rooms there, and I saw the table where he wrote his abdica-

tion. His bed and throne were of red and very fine. I think the "Gallerie of Henri IV" is perhaps the finest room in the whole house. The ceiling is beautifully painted and it is all exquisite. After going all over the palace, which is very large, we took a cab although it was still raining, and drove in the woods which are really much finer than those at St.Germain. At three the sun came out and the rest of the drive through the forest was beautiful. The sun shone on the drops of rain on the trees and the effect was lovely.
