a carriage to the hotel, and then after ordering lunch took a walk on one of the long walks by the ocean.  There are trei of these walks, and in August they are packed with fashionable people.  But now the place looked quite desserted.  After lunch we decided to spend the afternoon on the beach where the boys could dig and Fraulein and myself loaf.  This we did and enjoyed it imensely.  An afternoon with nothing to do but gaze and [[insertion]] see [[/insertion]] sea and sky is delightful sometimes.  We took the 4.45 train home after a very pleasant day.

June 14th 1890.  Saturday.
This morning I had to go to be tried ᵥ[[insertion]] on [[/insertion]] at Nicoles.  After this extremely unpleasant opporation I went on the Serpentine rowing.  I want to have a nice lot of exercise in my arms before going home, and nothing could be better than this
This afternoon we spent at the Savoy Theatre, where they are acting the Gondoliers by G + S.
The troop is very good indeed. Curtice Pounds is splendid, he had a lovely tenor voice, and acts very well.  Geraldine Ulma is pretty and has a sweet voice.  She is going to leave the troop, it is a shame I think
