[[underlined]] Thursday 18. [[/underlined]] continued the operation of cleaning up around the house., E. made 4 barrels of Cyder today.

[[underlined]] Friday 19.[[/underlined]] Fixed my painting room to begin to paint, repaired my palate which was broken. This afternoon James Patterson and his family came doon, they bring startling news from the army, perhaps by telegraph, that a desperate battle is still going on in Maryland, which commenced this day week and that 9 of our officers have been wounded, that Gen. Mc. [[McClelland?]] gave Gen. Jackson 4 hours to surrender which he refused, & today the battle is renewed with great fury on both sides with great slaughter.

[[underlined]]Saturday 20.[[/underlined]] I finished clearing up around the house today. Mrs. Peale, Mrs. Tatham, May, Burdee, Eddy Patterson, Geo. Tatham and Ellen all went in the spring-wagon to Mr. Paxon's. Took dinner after they returned. Miss Sarah Levan and Miss Boss came and I. pressed out a tubful of Elderberries for her to make jelly for the sick soldiers.

[[underlined]] Sunday 21.[[/underlined]] May, Mary & I went to Church this morning, the sermon was for the children. This afternoon Joseph and his friend Pomroy came and spent an hour here.

[[underlined]] Monday 22.[[/underlined]] Mary, Mrs. Tatham, May & Eddy went to Pott. soon after breakefast & returned about 3 oclock. Mrs. Frederic Patterson, Lydia & Dolly came in the cars  walked from the Landing, walked back in the evening. Mr. & Mrs T. Walker came in the afternoon.
I painted all the afternoon on N. 82.

[[underlined]] Tuesday, 23.[[/underlined]] I painted all day on N. [[strikethrough]] 80. [[/strikethrough]] 81. 82. My son Burd came from Washington unexpectedly at noon today has a leave of absence for 12 days on account of his fall, he is much better but very lame.
