January 1863.
[[underlined]] Wednesday 21.[[/underlined]] As Mary was painting the drapery of Mr. Basts portrait I didnot paint until the afternoon I then painted on N 87. The light has been very bad for it has been snowing all day. Mary took Miss Caroline Lewis to S. Haven this afternoon and left her at Mr. Snyders. 
31°. wind 3 n e snow. 35°. n e snow storm. 35°. n e Rain.
[[underlined]] Thursday 22. [[/underlined]] I was not very well today therefore did not paint, hunted up stuff for stretching frames, and made a begining of two.

[[underlined]] Friday 23. [[/underlined]] James Patterson his wife and all their children spent the day with us, excep Florra. Mary expected Mr. Graef to sit, but he didnot come she then took a small canvas and begun a copey from a point of [[underlined]] simplicity.[[/underlined]] Mary and Louisia went to S. Haven, got her six oval canvases by the express time.
[[underlined]] Mary White [[/underlined]] & her sister came this afternoon.

[[underlined]] Saturday 24. [[/underlined]] I painted all this afternoon on N. 87. Mary and her mother took tea at Mrs. Levans, in the morning Mrs. Peale and Louisia went to Orwigsburg. Edward and his men are still at Sailors farm bailing hay. [[underlined]] Mary White [[/underlined]] & her sister went home this morning to stay til Monday. I prepared some stuff for stretchers. Got a letter from Burd dated. [[underlined]] Medical Director's Office, 11th. Corps Army of the Potomac, Stafford Court House[[/underlined]] Jan: 18th. 1863. He is quite well. He has been lately appointed Medical Director of the 11th Army Corps in the staff of Genl. Stahel. This is a position of great responsibility and keeps him much employed. Genl. Sigel is now the Commander of Grand Reserve, consisting of the 11th & 12th Corps. His intention was to resign, but as the army is about to make a move forward, he willnot resign at present.

[[underlined]] Sunday 25.[[/underlined]] Edward and Louisia went to orwigsburg to church and spent the day at Benny Potts got home at dark. we have had no company today, the roads are very muddy. This has been like a spring day  the sun shown most delightfully, the winged ants were in abondance, the Turkeys & Fowls seemed to enjoy the day.
