[[underlined]] Sunday March 1. 1863 [[/underlined]] This month has opened first with snow, then hail and then rain, cloudy all day and violent west wind in the evening after sunset. 33° calm, snow, then hail, then rain. 39° calm spit of snow. 39°. west 3 clo 10 w. air dry. [[underlined]] Monday 2d. [[/underlined]] Mary and May went soon after breakefast in the carriage to Potte. went shopping attended to business visited friends, dined at brother George's &c got home late. I painted all day on N. 87. This has been the most pleasant day that we have had for some time, but the ground is very wet, roads muddy. 29°. clear s w. clear 51° s w clo 3 s w. 44° calm clo 8 w. [[underlined]] Tuesday 3d. [[/underlined]] Mr. Graeff sat this morning to Mary I was all the morning engaged with the stoves, pipes coal & kindling &c. Mary and May went this afternoon to S. H. supped with Mrs. Levan 35° calm, mist, at 10 sprinkle of snow. 49° w. clo w. 36° w, snow. [[underlined]] Wednesday 4th [[/underlined]] I went in the carriage with Mrs. Peale to the Landing after breakefast sold to Mr. Kline tallow and bought a variety of articles of him. Mr. Wolf sat to Mary, he and Sarah Levan dined with us, the roads are intolerably bad & wind n.w. piercingly cold. 26° calm w. clo 5. 34° n w clo 4 n w. 21° calm s e clear. [[underlined]] Thursday 5th [[/underlined]] Miss Bast sat to Mary this morning she walked here and Mary took her home after dinner. I then painted on N. 87, and I think it finished it may require a few touches. Mary got a letter from Franklin saying that my nephew Thomas [[strikethrough]] was dead [[/strikethrough]]. Jacobs was dead but didnot say the cause of it. 13°. calm w clear. 32° calm s w clear. 26°calm s w clo 2 w. [[underlined]] Friday 6th. [[/underlined]] This is the 42d Anniversary of our marriage and I may safely say that few have lived so many years in harmony together as we have. Mr. Graeff didnot come today so Mary painted on Burdies portrait. I did not paint any today. 30° calm s w sprinkle of snow. 41° w clo 10. 42°. calm clo 8. s w. [[underlined]] Saturday 7 [[/underlined]] I painted all day on N. 87, and commenced another Copey of Uncle James s Fruit piece, with a white watermillon, peaches, grapes &c. for Charles & Harriet. Mary had no sitters today it being very stormy, snow. 33° calm e snow. 34°. n e rain. 30° calm e clo 10.
