Saw some fresh Rhino tracks & old Elephant tracks.
[[underlined]] Jan 11. [[/underlined]]
Away at daybreak - a fairish long trek but through a delightful country. C shot a couple of good Konganis on the way. Very good heads. Just before we reached camp we came across a good wildebeest bull with a lot of Kongonis. I got with 300 yards & put a bullet into the right spot about 2 inches behind the shoulder.
Round he spun & then went off very sick. I went for him again & put another into him. But even then he made off. I could see the bullet hole in his shoulder but he was apparently as strong as ever & though I followed him for hours - I could not get up to him. I saw him again this evening going down to water, but he was wary as anything & though I tried to cut him off, I could not get near him & darkness prevented me getting him. I can't understand it. He is the kind I have shot & lost since I came out, and I know I hit him right. I hope I will get him tomorrow. I am in despair over him.
